R. Gabrielle McCormick

Yesterday, I found out that one of my aunts has breast cancer.

Even though they caught it very early, the jarring news upset me.

As I spoke with my mom, she brought up how it could’ve easily been her, another aunt, or even me. That even though I’m under 30, young women like myself are not immune.

Last night it was difficult for me to focus and work, so I turned on a movie. It just so happened to be the television premier of Jupiter Ascending. But in between cleaning, texting, and watching – I heard a line that hit me in my core:

“Time is the single most precious commodity in the universe.”

Sometimes we get so caught up in school, work, and scholarships that we forget how limited our time really is.

Each day is an opportunity for us to honor the sacrifices of our ancestors.

Each day is an opportunity for us to make our family and friends proud.

Each day is an opportunity for us to show up for our dreams.

Sometimes it takes life events like these to wake us up. Difficult events like cancer, layoffs, addictions, divorce, mistakes, and other challenges, for us to realize that we cannot afford to waste the time we have.

Each day is an opportunity for us to be our best selves.

Today, take a few moments to be grateful for the good and bad things in your life. Center yourself before moving forward on scholarship activities. Slow down a second to smell the roses and enjoy where you are.

You’ll never be able to relive this point in time, so make it matter.
