Each year, we all experience our own “personal holiday” A.K.A. our birthday.

As my birthday approached earlier this month, my parents began sharing stories surrounding my birth and past birthdays. I normally reflect on any life changes that have occurred over the year and look for areas I can grow as a person. I actually consider my birthday, a “New Year”.

Combining the stories I hear from family members and my self-assessment, I feel renewed. I feel like a new beginning is here. It gives me the extra push I need to give my scholarship essays the oomph I need to win.

I want you to think about some of the things that happened when you were born or past birthdays. Use them to make your essays more personal, but most importantly to provide a frame of reference for committee members. Here are some question to get you started:

  • Were there complications during the pregnancy?
  • Did something happen in the delivery room?
  • What happened immediately after you were born?
  • How were your first few days and weeks of life?
  • Has anything monumental happened on your birthday? What happened? How did it impact you?
  • Have you had any birthday parties that were memorable? How so?

Allow your answers to serve as a starting point, while remembering that the holidays are right around the corner! You’ll have plenty of time in the upcoming months to elaborate on your answers.
